Michigan Tech Enterprise Corporation

The Michigan Tech Enterprise Corporation (MTEC) is a private, non-profit corporation that was set up to manage the SmartZone. While MTEC and the SmartZone incorporate Michigan Tech’s name to identify the affiliation, MTEC is an independent corporation and is not financially supported by the university.

MTEC is accomplishing its mission by offering programs and services that encourage entrepreneurial development and that help ensure the success of start-ups and small companies. These programs and services include the following activities:

• Incubators: three different incubators to attract start-ups and corporate branch offices, with flexible leases and shared office equipment and services;

• Business Development Programs: programs that are designed to address specific needs of entrepreneurs, such as Investment Forums, Educational Workshops, and Networking Events;

• Business Services: access to a network of Financial, Legal, Business and Marketing consultants and service providers, usually at reduced rates;

• Student Programs: entrepreneurial internships and co-op opportunities that provide real-world experiences for the students and inexpensive quality assistance to the entrepreneur.

Local Economy

The Keweenaw economy boasts a diversity of manufacturing firms and a rapidly growing service sector. The Houghton/Hancock area offers a number of competitive advantages to high-tech companies, including the following:

• Availability of an educated workforce of engineers and scientists - in a recent survey, 54% of MTU graduates would prefer to stay in the area if jobs were available
• A growing and productive research enterprise at MTU
• Access to a full spectrum of high-tech training services, including certifications and associates, bachelors and advanced degrees
• A strong connection to Finland
• A rich artistic community
• A spectacular environment and quality of life in a region that has much to offer; a unique history and traditions related to the region’s copper mining legacy, American Indian and Finnish cultures, a diversity of arts & entertainment, numerous museums, unique shops, quality restaurants and gambling casinos, and wonderful sports and recreation that includes world class cross country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, camping, scuba diving, mountain biking, and more.

Michigan Smart Zones

The SmartZone program was created through recent legislation that facilitates the capture of certain taxes for use by designated SmartZones to foster the creation of high-tech jobs, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) administrates the program. All the SmartZones are linked to the technology transfer efforts of state-supported universities, in this case Michigan Technological University (MTU).
